Sweetest Day, the third Saturday of October, is a holiday that’s only recently started to catch on in more parts of the United States. But it’s actually been around for a lot longer than you might think, and the overall idea of kindness it encourages is, well, sweet! If you’ve never heard of Sweetest Day, here’s the lowdown and ways you can celebrate Ooze-style.
What is Sweetest Day?
Apparently one lovey-dovey holiday a year wasn’t enough for Midwesterners. Just a few years after Valentine’s Day caught on, the first Sweetest Day took place in Cleveland. The idea came from C.C. Hartzell, a local candy maker. Hartzell and 12 other pastry chefs spent October 10, 1921 passing out candy (20,000 boxes, to be exact) to underprivileged members of the community.
Because of its origin, it takes on a bit of a different meaning than the ultra-romantic Valentine’s Day. Sweetest Day encourages an overall gratefulness for all the love in your life. It’s a day many take the time to let those they love know they care, extend small gestures of kindness, and try to spread good vibes wherever they go.
How and who you choose to celebrate on Sweetest Day is totally up to you—which means the possibilities of ‘sweetness’ are endless!
For that long-distance friendship…
Sweetest Day is the perfect opportunity to finally plan that Zoom call with your bestie who lives hundreds of miles away. Make it a virtual smoke session and have both of you bring out your favorite pieces for a little show-and-tell.
If you really want to do something special for them, whip up some cookies with cannabutter and ship them a box before your call—because really, what could be sweeter than that? You can both enjoy one (or two) together on your call and expect hours of laughter.
For your stoner sweetie…
Don’t worry—you don’t have to go all out for your significant other like you do on February 14th. Surprise them with a candlelit dinner at home (takeout is fine) and a fat dab for dessert! Take your portable dab rig straight to the couch and veg out with your sweetie for the rest of the evening.
For your beloved roommate…
It can be tough living in close quarters with a friend—especially while being quarantined. The easiest way to take the edge off is to just get out of the house together! Hit up a drive-in movie theater with your loaded travel piece and chill out.
Another sweet gesture for your roommate or close friend is to replace one of their smoke accessories or batteries they may have lost (or that you may have broken). Order it to be delivered right to their doorstep with a cute note to really melt their heart.
These are just a few ideas, but there are so many small ways you can show someone you care. So mark your calendar for Sweetest Day, October 17, and send a sweet gesture to someone you care about.
