Wax pens and vape pens aren’t “tomayto, tomahto” like they’re often treated. In fact, they’re different in quite a few ways, including the material they vaporize, how they’re made and how they’re used. Why is it important to note these differences? Well, if you go into a smoke shop and ask for a wax pen and you have a cartridge you want to use, they might not bring back what you expected. Think about it this way: all wax pens are vape pens, but not all vape pens are wax pens… and then some are both. Let’s break it down.
The main difference is that vape pens are basically a battery on which to attach a pre-filled oil cartridge, and wax pens are designed for concentrates. Vape pens don’t include a coil, making it a closed system perfect for loading external cartridges or even coils onto. The coil or cartridge screws on to the heating element of the battery (the pen itself) that vaporizes the oil. These devices are great for the smoker who wants cleanliness and convenience. They’re super easy– all you need to do is connect the cartridge and click a button. Plus, you never touch the actual material.
Some of our favorite vape pens are the Slim Twist Pro Vape Pen and the Novex Extract Vape Battery, both of which are compatible with all 510 thread cartridges, feature a preheat option and different temperature and voltage options. If you already know what voltage you like, our 650, 900 and 1100 batteries are an even simpler option.
We say all wax pens are technically vape pens because of the literal vaporization that occurs to the material in the device. Wax pens have a coil that the user loads concentrates onto themselves. Preparation is a bit more of a process than the vape pen, which actually makes them great for the hands-on stoner who prefers raw material and finds the entire smoking process meditative. The user removes the top of a wax atomizer, loads the dab onto the coil, replaces the top and heats the dab (just the click of a button) to vaporize it. Our favorite wax pen right now is the Gusher Globe pen kit, which makes dabbing on-the-go discreet and easy without sacrificing fat clouds and a super smooth smoke.
As the cannabis industry continues to change during these unpredictable and unregulated times, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a device that can be used for both cartridges and raw concentrates. Not to mention, your own smoking material of choice is likely to fluctuate over time. Our Duplex Dual Extract Vaporizer includes a vape battery that can be used for pre-filled cartridges and a coil and atomizer for wax. Oh, and the Slim Twist Pro vape pen we mentioned earlier? You can attach a coil to the top just like with a cartridge.
