Not only do we have a few tips and tricks on how to maintain your weed pen for optimal performance, but pens and dab coils also need to be cleaned regularly. It's just a part of the smoking game! That’s why we’ve put together a practical guide with step-by-step instructions on how to clean your weed pen so you can get the most out of it for much longer.
Why do I need to clean my weed pen?
Wax residue can build up in weed pens over time that will cause them to function less than optimally, or not work at all. If the residue builds up so much that it settles in the threads on the atomizer (which is also the airflow pathway), that’s when you will feel resistance or a complete blockage on the inhale and won’t get as good of a hit, if any.
How to Clean Your Weed Pen
First and foremost, our best piece of cleaning advice is to do it AFTER your dab session! This sounds backwards, but think about it. It's way easier to wipe off a little residue when it's still warm and malleable, than after it has hardened and cemented to the inside of your device.
To deep clean a dirty pen, you’ll need a liquid cleaning solution that’s tough enough to dissolve sticky, hardened residue, but that’s gentle enough to be used on something you inhale from. Alcohol is a simple and effective solution to use. Ooze Resolution Micro Swabs are pre-soaked in alcohol and help you get into all the little nooks and crannies in your cartridge pen and dab pen coils. You'll use a lot less swabs per cleaning session when you clean up after your sesh, rather than before you start.
We’ll go over how to clean two of our most popular weed pens, but these steps should apply to most vape pens with atomizers or cartridges.
How to Clean the Ooze Beacon
The Beacon extract vaporizer is a super slim vape that slows you to load your concentrates right inside. Just like with any weed pen though, sometimes residue builds up and needs to be wiped away. To deep clean the Beacon:
- Twist the mouthpiece and atomizer to remove.
- Prepare an alcohol infused cotton swab, or use one of the Ooze Resolution micro swabs.
- Swab the inside of the mouthpiece, around the outside of the atomizer, and between the battery threads.
- To clean the azul ceramic plate, add a 1-3 drops of rubbing alcohol to the dish, and heat until the plate is dry. Repeat this step until your dish turns back to blue.
How to Clean the Ooze Duplex 2
The Duplex 2 vaporizer is another fan-favorite for extracts. Cleaning it is very similar to the Beacon:
- Disassemble device by removing the base and mouthpiece.
- Use an alcohol swab or Resolution micro swab to clean 510 threads and base piece.
- Use cotton ball soaked in alcohol to clean the air chamber.
- Clean the onyx atomizer by putting a couple drops of alcohol into the dish and heating it until it’s dry. Make sure to turn it off once the dish is dry—don’t heat a dry atomizer without extract or vaporizer in it.
Regardless of the pen or piece that you’re cleaning, you should wait for everything to dry, then reassemble and prepare it for use.
If these steps just aren’t doing the trick and you’re still feeling resistance in your hit, it may simply be time to replace the atomizer. Pick up a 2-pack of replacement atomizers so you already have them when and if you need one.
How to Unclog Your Weed Pen
Sometimes your weed vape pen doesn’t need a full cleaning, it just needs to be unclogged. Usually this just means there is residue inside the mouthpiece. Instead of trying to suck out the clog until you’re blue in the face, run Prep Mode for a cycle!
This is a gentle heat cycle that warms up the airway and makes it much easier to unclog. Press the button twice to get it started. Let Prep Mode run for its full cycle before you attempt to inhale and clear it.
